Want to Jump Higher? Part 1

Most people don’t understand how impressive the ability to jump really is. The ability to propel yourself up off the surface of the planet is actually really great. Sure, we can’t stay up in the air too long, but the fact that we can fight the gravity of a massive planet is no small thing. At Rebounderz, we help kids and adults remember how wonderful jumping can be with our extensive trampoline park. However, we notice that some people can jump higher than others. It’s like they know secrets about jumping.

As it happens, we know some secrets about jumping ourselves. In today’s blog, we’re going to share a few things you can do to get those few extra inches of air.

Visualize Your Jump

We want to start here because it’s a great way to jump higher without doing any exercises. A lot of what our bodies do depends on our minds, and that means the first thing you have to do is get your brain in the right place. It might seem silly, but it actually works.

If you need to make the best jump of your life, close your eyes first. Imagine your muscles getting stronger and bigger. Mentally make yourself feel lighter and more springy. It just takes a minute. Once you’ve got your mind right, launch yourself into the air. This method has been proven to give jumpers up to five more inches of height in their jumps. It’s amazing to feel the proof of the phrase “mind over matter”!

Cultivate Flexibility

The more movement your joints have, the more force you can get out of them.  You don’t have to work as hard to get your limbs to really reach for new heights. If you’re serious about jumping higher, stretch three times a week with a special focus on your hamstrings, glutes, and hip flexors. Not only will you prevent injuries by stretching, you’ll give the body better access to efficient motion.

Bulk Up Your Fast-Twitch Muscle Fibers

Do you participate in any activities that require your muscles to react very quickly? If not, your fast-twitch muscles aren’t getting stronger, and you won’t be able to get the explosive force you need for a great jump. We all have fast-twitch and slow-twitch muscles, and if you love activities that require endurance, your slow-twitch muscles are doing all the work. On the other hand, if you participate in activities like sprinting, you’re developing your fast-twitch muscles. Sprinters actually have the highest percentage of fast-twitch muscles compared to all athletes, so sprinting exercises are a great way to improve your jumps.
