Here at Rebounderz, we are big fans of team sports! They are a great way to provide socialization for your kids, build on skills they will use even as an adult, and have a great time while doing it! Basketball is one of our all time favorites, which is why we have our own trampoline basketball course at our Lansdale trampoline park. It’s a great place for kids to have fun and practice the sport at the same time! But in between going to our basketball course, here are some basketball drills kids can run to help them improve their game.
This is a great drill option for building footwork and ball handling together. Essentially, players begin by passing the ball to the coach in front of them. After the pass, the player will sprint to the free throw line, where the coach will pass back to them. The player will then catch the ball in a jump stop, pivot towards the basket, and execute whatever kind of scoring their coach yells out (3 point, layup, etc.).
An integral part of basketball is being able to force your way through the opposing team to make layups. This drill helps your kids practice just that. Start by bringing a player out, giving them the ball, and giving them a slight head start over the other defensive player. When the coach calls out “Start!”, the player with the ball will dribble as fast as they can and try to score a layup while the other player closes behind them to try to steal the ball. This drill helps players perform even under pressure.
Dribbling is one of the fundamentals every new player needs to master. This fun introductory drill is a great way to expose your kids to this skill set. You just have the players line up on one end of the court, give them all a basketball, and assign them each a dribble movement (examples: right hand up and left hand back, crossovers, behind the back, low dribble, through the legs, etc.). Then, when the coach yells “Start!”, each player makes their way to the other end of the court using the dribble style they were assigned. Coaches need to make sure that each player keeps their head up (straight ahead, not looking at the ball) at all times. Once each player has mastered the dribble style they were assigned, switch them up repeatedly until every one gets practice in every style.
Hopefully these drills will prove helpful when training your little one into a basketball powerhouse. If you’re having trouble getting your child motivated for the sport, bring them on by our trampoline basketball course! We also have lots of other fun attractions here at our Lansdale trampoline park. If you have any questions about our location, attractions, or rules, please don’t hesitate to give us a call today. One of our friendly and knowledgeable representatives will be happy to answer any questions that you may have.
